Adding poignant quotes to your Easter Sermon provides a new pathway for your listeners to understand scripture and truth; the right quote in the right moment will help people connect to the message when other avenues have failed.

While your mind may immediately go to book or speaking quotes, great quotes for Easter can come from song lyrics, devotionals, your past sermons, and—of course—scripture.

Where You Can Use Easter Sunday Quotes

Pastors are always looking for strong components to add to their sermon. Illustrations, art, video clips, and photos all serve as ‘other elements’ to use in order to convey a central message or big idea.

It’s natural for Easter quotes to find their home in your Easter message. However, it’s worth thinking outside the box in order to get more mileage out of the quotes that resonate most closely with the angle you’ve chosen for this Easter.

Here are a few additional ideas for how you can incorporate Easter quotes into your Easter celebration plans:

  • Create quote graphics to share on social media
  • Incorporate hand-selected quotes into your Easter bulletin
  • Roll a collection of quotes in your pre-service slideshow
  • Apply quotes to your sermon series graphic package
  • Print quotes on 8.5” x 11” paper and frame them at urinals and on the inside of stall doors

Again, think out of the box.

Obviously, you can incorporate Easter quotes into your sermon and when thinking through which quotes would be a fit, selecting those which are the best fit for your sermon is a great place to start.

Tips for Incorporating Easter Quotes Into Your Sermon

There isn’t much science that goes into incorporating Easter quotes into your message however, pastors who know what they’re talking about will offer a few tips to help you get the most impact from the quotes you choose.

Be selective; don’t overdo it. Choose only the most relevant quotes and use them sparingly. Leave people wanting more from the sources you choose to quote.

Don’t allow a quote to be a stumbling block for listeners. Be aware of the origins of the quotes you select, the background of who said them, and their greater context. Quoting a figure who may not be a Christian or does not lead a Christ-like life can create confusion in some.

Make sure the quote serves the sermon. Even if you really love a particular quote, if it doesn’t directly connect with your big idea, save it for another time.

Get creative with multimedia quotes. If the quote you’re using is available as an audio or video clip, playing the media (rather than reading the quote) can enhance the impact of the quote and add further realness to the greater point of your Easter message.

Creating Sermon Slides for Your Easter Quotes

The easiest way to use a quote is to simply read it. To help your congregation follow along, creating a quote slide and projecting it on the screen can go a long way. Adding simple black text on a white background (or white text on a black background) is fine—but if you’re looking to elevate this aspect of your Easter sermon, here are a couple ideas.

Create a sermon slide design that uses your Easter artwork.

This can be as simple as adding the Easter artwork image in the lower right-hand corner of the slide. At Ministry Pass, we include a sermon background image with many of our sermon series so pastors have a background for quotes and other slides that match their sermon series art.

Here are a few examples of how we design our sermon slides for Ministry Pass sermon series.

Include a photo of quote source

To properly source your quote, you’ll include their name and, if relevant, the publication where the quote was presented. To bring greater life and realness to the quote, consider adding an image of the person sharing the quote. This sends a message to your listeners, “This quote is not from some mystical angel, but rather, from a real person, just like you.”

Here are a few examples of how Redemption Gateway in Mesa, Arizona has portrayed quotes with a photo of the individual source.

As an aside, you may wonder, “How do I get their picture without the background?” Without getting into too much detail, this is called masking an image. If you don’t have someone on staff or a volunteer who is savvy in photoshop, you can find designers on platforms like Fiverr who can mask an image for you for around $5.

Going Beyond Quotes and Using Great Easter Sermon Illustrations

It is not uncommon to start your search looking for a short quote and quickly discover that what you really need is an illustration with more story and more context.

Sometimes the message you’re trying to communicate is better served with a sermon illustration and this can especially be true on Easter. An illustration is a great tool to lay groundwork for preaching Christ’s death, resurrection, ascension, and promise of his return.

If you are in search of illustrations to incorporate into this year’s Easter sermon, be sure to head over to Illustration Ideas, a site full of powerful free sermon illustrations you can use for any sermon.

Find sermon illustrations ideas that connect.
Illustration Ideas offers free sermon illustrations for pastors and teachers.

Of course, most of the sermon series we offer on Ministry Pass include a sermon researched series guide that includes several illustrations to choose from for each message in that series.

Still, Illustration Ideas is a great place to find those elements you really need in your sermon.

Easter Quotes Provide Fresh Perspectives to Help Your Congregation Receive the Message

Quotes from pastors, theologians, authors, song writers, Apostles, disciples, and Jesus himself can allow you to make a connection with a listener who has yet to resonate with a particular phrasing of the Gospel message—and that’s okay!

Your congregation is filled with individuals of different ages, backgrounds, races, socioeconomic lifestyles, education levels, and spiritual backgrounds… pulling in a variety of spiritual perspectives and articulations is a gift that is more accessible today than ever before in history.

Use that gift—your church will be better for it.

Jesus’ resurrection is the beginning of God’s new project not to snatch people away from earth to heaven but to colonize earth with the life of heaven. That, after all, is what the Lord’s Prayer is all about.

We focus on Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday, but we forget to pause in the stillness of the days between. Find time today to be present in that place of waiting. There is treasure to be found in the sacred peace that comes as you breathe in that place of quiet surrender. Don’t rush through the space called “Between.

Here is the amazing thing about Easter; the Resurrection Sunday for Christians is this, that Christ in the dying moments on the cross gives us the greatest illustration of forgiveness possible.

If man had his way, the plan of redemption would be an endless and bloody conflict. In reality, salvation was bought not by Jesus’ fist, but by His nail-pierced hands; not by muscle but by love; not by vengeance but by forgiveness; not by force but by sacrifice. Jesus Christ our Lord surrendered in order that He might win; He destroyed His enemies by dying for them and conquered death by allowing death to conquer Him.

Love always involves responsibility, and love always involves sacrifice. And we do not really love Christ unless we are prepared to face His task and take up His Cross.

William Barclay

On Easter we wrap up pretty, little decorated eggs symbolizing life and renewal. We do this because of the intangibility of a promised gift, which is the eventual resurrection of the body, restored to its finest forever state. Easter celebrates life and the idea of its eternal value, most notably the life of the gift-giver who demands nothing in return. He is your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Easter is the miracle of transformation as seen in the change of seasons, in the maturation of mortal persons, and in the resurrection of souls.

Outside the cross of Jesus Christ, there is no hope in this world. That cross and resurrection at the core of the Gospel is the only hope for humanity. Wherever you go, ask God for wisdom on how to get that Gospel in, even in the toughest situations of life.

The great gift of Easter is hope – Christian hope which makes us have that confidence in God, in his ultimate triumph, and in his goodness and love, which nothing can shake.

The gifts of the Master are these: freedom, life, hope, new direction, transformation, and intimacy with God. If the cross was the end of the story, we would have no hope. But the cross isn’t the end. Jesus didn’t escape from death; he conquered it and opened the way to heaven for all who will dare to believe. The truth of this moment, if we let it sweep over us, is stunning. It means Jesus really is who he claimed to be, we are really as lost as he said we are, and he really is the only way for us to intimately and spiritually connect with God again.
