Hey everyone, I’m Justin Trapp, and this is the Ministry Minute.
Today’s story is about the longest sermon in history: 53 hours straight. Yes, really.
In November 2014, Pastor Zach of Cross Church in Mount Dora, Florida, set out to preach from Genesis to Revelation without stopping.
He covered 45 of his own sermons, moved through over 600 PowerPoint slides, and stayed on his feet for 53 hours and 18 minutes.
It earned him the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest speech marathon. But the real reason behind it is what makes this story more powerful. Zach didn’t do it for fame. He did it to raise money for addiction recovery.
He wanted to spotlight the goodness of God and raise $100,000 for Powerhouse Recovery, a local ministry that helps men break free from addiction.
He preached to a rotating room of listeners. Guinness required at least 10 people in the room at all times. So volunteers came in shifts day and night to support him.
This wasn’t just endurance for the sake of spectacle. It was a pastor leveraging his voice and stamina for something bigger than himself.
By the end, they didn’t just break a record. They met their goal and helped fund life transformation for dozens of men in recovery.
It was long, yes, but every hour meant something.
Ministry doesn’t just happen behind the scenes. It can happen in bold public ways, too.
Pastor Zach didn’t just preach a long sermon. He created a moment people couldn’t ignore. And he used that attention to point people to Jesus and to raise $100,000 for a recovery ministry.
Sometimes your church’s breakthrough won’t come through routine. It’ll come through creativity. Don’t be afraid to think big. Don’t be afraid to go public. Don’t be afraid to break a record if it helps break chains.
