Building a Culture of Generosity: What Pastors Can Learn from Jimmy Darts | Ministry Minute Episode 33

Episode Transcript

Picture this: you witness a 10-year-old kid giving a man experiencing homelessness $100. And the man just breaks down. What would you do when given the choice to be generous?

I’m Justin Trapp, and welcome to the Ministry Minute podcast. Today’s story is about a boy who received $200 for Christmas. But there was a catch. His parents tell him, “You get to keep half, but you have to give the other half away to a stranger.”

The Seed of Radical Generosity

So he walks up to a homeless man and hands him $100. And the man just breaks down—not because it was a life-changing amount of money, but because someone finally acknowledged his need.

That kid was Jimmy Kellogg, better known today as Jimmy Darts. That single moment planted a seed that grew into a whole ministry of radical generosity. Years later, Jimmy started filming simple acts of kindness. Nothing flashy. Just human moments.

The Power of the Collective

One day, he posted a video where he helped someone out and added a simple way for viewers to join in giving. What happened next shocked him. Casual viewers began funding the life change of this person. Thousands of small gifts poured in, and the need was met in a way that no one person could have pulled off alone.

And that’s the part I want you to hear as a ministry leader. Most of us have been trained to think impact comes from a few big givers, a few key leaders, or a few strong personalities. But Jimmy’s story shows something different: When you make a need visible and give people a simple on-ramp to participate, ordinary people love joining in on what God is doing.

The Pastor as Narrator

Here’s what Jimmy does that’s surprisingly pastoral: He doesn’t try to be the hero of the story. He often flips the spotlight to the person who showed kindness—the stranger who helped, the passerby who stopped, the everyday person who chose compassion. Jimmy’s just the one holding the camera, saying, “Look at this. This is what goodness looks like.”

Pastor, what if you became the chief storyteller of other people’s faithfulness? Not just the preacher of truth, but the narrator of God’s miracles. The one who notices the quiet servant, the generous teenager, or the volunteer who prays with people when no one’s watching.

A Practical Takeaway

Pick one story you can tell publicly this week. Not a polished testimony video—just highlight a real moment of kindness, obedience, or courage that happened in your church family.

  • Tell it in a service.
  • Put it in a newsletter.
  • Share it from the stage for 30 seconds.

And if there’s a need attached, make the next step simple. Not a giant campaign—just a clear invitation: “If you want to be part of this, here’s how.”

You Aren’t Alone

You can build a culture where people believe, “I can help. I can give. I can show up.” Because they are allowed to show up in the first place. If you’re tired today, let this be a reminder: God still uses small acts. A kid giving away $100. A simple story told out loud. A church that learns to celebrate the good.

You don’t have to carry it alone. You just have to keep pointing people toward the next faithful step.

I’m Justin Trapp, and this has been Ministry Minute.
