One Dive Changed Everything

Zachary Abblitt was eighteen years old, and his life was wide open. He was a runner. A surfer. A swimmer. A musician. Then one dive into shallow water changed everything.

The water was shallower than he expected. He hit his head. And in an instant, he was paralyzed. His C5 and C6 vertebrae were fractured. He had no feeling below his neck. Doctors rushed him into surgery. And the life he had known was suddenly gone.

By every human measure, this was the kind of moment that should have crushed his hope. But one week later, from a hospital bed, Zachary said something no one expected: “I’m really excited to see where the Lord is going to take me.”

A Trial Is a Circumstance With No Hope

Zachary later said his paralysis did not feel like a trial. Because to him, a trial was a circumstance with no hope. And with Jesus, he still had hope. He once said he would rather walk through the fire with God than walk through the world without Him.

The Difference Between Optimism and Hope

Pastor, that is the difference between optimism and hope. Optimism says, “This will probably get better.” Hope says, “Even here, Christ is with me.” Optimism depends on circumstances changing. Hope depends on the presence of God.

And your people do not need a faith that only works when life makes sense. They need a firm foundation for the moment everything falls apart.

What This Means for Your Ministry

Because sooner or later, every person in your church will face a season where something is stripped away. Health. Certainty. Plans. Dreams. Control. And in that moment, they will need more than a formula. They will need Jesus. The One who is present in the fire. The One whose strength is made perfect in weakness. The One who gives hope when circumstances do not.

So pastor, keep preaching Christ as the foundation. Not comfort. Not control. Not the life we thought we were going to have. Christ. Because when everything else is shaken, He is the only One who holds.
