Imagine pulling over at a neighborhood garage sale, a quick stop on a Saturday morning.
But instead of finding old tools and furniture, you find an ex-pastor selling his Bibles, his commentaries, and his entire calling boxed up and marked for sale.
I’m Justin Trapp, and this is the Ministry Minute, where I share real stories from the front lines of ministry.
Today’s story is about burnout, legacy, and the moment I knew Ministry Pass mattered.
You see, a few weeks before we launched Ministry Pass, my wife and I were driving home when she spotted a garage sale. She loves repurposing furniture, so we stopped.
As we browsed, I noticed a stack of seminary books, and I asked the man if he had gone through Bible college. Turns out we went to the same one.
He told me he had served in ministry for many years. So, I asked if he went to a church in the area. He looked down and quietly said, “No, I haven’t been to a church in a long time.”
He shared how ministry took a toll on his health, his family, and his marriage. Eventually, he walked away.
And as he talked, I saw something that made my heart sink. He was selling it all. His Bibles, his commentaries, his calling.
He wasn’t angry. He wasn’t bitter. He had simply moved on.
What struck me wasn’t resentment. It was an absence. A legacy quietly changing direction.
He had remarried. Their kids were in high school, and I couldn’t stop wondering, do they even know Jesus?
Had they ever heard their dad preach? Had they ever seen the inside of a church?
You see, this wasn’t just a man walking away from the ministry. It was a generation growing up without it.
When a pastor walks away, it doesn’t just affect a church. It affects a family. It affects the future.
Burnout isn’t personal; it’s generational. I went home that day and wept. I remembered exactly why God put Ministry Pass on my heart.
You see, it’s never been about graphics or sermon series.
It’s about helping pastors stay in the fight, helping them lead their churches and their families without sacrificing one for the other.
Because when a pastor stays healthy, their legacy can too.
If this story hits close to home, I want you to hear this. You’re not alone. We see you. We’re praying for you. And we built Ministry Pass to walk with you week after week.
This is the Ministry Minute. I’m Justin Trapp. Thanks for tuning in.
