From a Storefront to the Global Stage: The Story of T.D. Jakes
He was told he’d never be a preacher because of a speech impediment. Yet decades later, Time Magazine put him on the cover and called him “America’s Best Preacher.”
Hey everyone, I’m Justin Trapp, and this is Ministry Minute.
The Humble Beginnings
Before the books, the films, and the stadiums, Thomas Dexter Jakes was a 25-year-old pastor in a tiny storefront church in Smithers, West Virginia—ten members, no money, and a borrowed pulpit.
He’d grown up caring for his dying father, helping his mother run a janitorial business, and fighting the stutter that made people doubt his calling. But he preached anyway—to whoever would listen. Week after week, he poured himself out, sometimes preaching to more empty chairs than people.
The Explosion of Ministry
And slowly, God began to open doors. He started a small radio program called Get Ready. Then came his first conference, Woman, Thou Art Loosed—bold, passionate, and full of fire. It captured something deep in people’s hearts. Women came from everywhere, and within a few years, his ministry exploded onto the national stage.
By the mid-1990s, he moved to Dallas and launched The Potter’s House—a ministry that would grow to tens of thousands. He’s preached around the world—from Africa to Europe to the Americas—reaching millions through conferences, broadcasts, and film.
A Remarkable Refining Process
And then, in 2001, Time asked the question that shocked the world: “Is T.D. Jakes the next Billy Graham?”
But what makes his story remarkable isn’t the fame. It’s the fire. From the speech impediment to the storefront, from poverty to global influence, his life has been one long refining process—just like clay in the potter’s hands.
And even recently, when a heart attack nearly ended his life, Jakes said it reminded him again that God is not finished shaping him yet.
The Lesson for Your Season
His story reminds us: significance isn’t built from comfort. It’s forged in the fire. So if your season feels small, slow, or uncertain—don’t despise it. The same God who worked in a storefront preacher from West Virginia is still shaping you for an impact you can’t yet see.
What God wants to do through you, He must first do in you.
I’m Justin Trapp—and this has been your Ministry Minute.
