Brian McCormack’s dream died in public.

The gym was packed.

The cameras were flashing.

He was about to sign with Texas A&M.

Then his dad walked in and said the offer was gone.

One hour earlier, Texas A&M had called.

Brian’s scholarship offer had been pulled.

And in front of his classmates, his coaches, and the press, the dream he had built his life around collapsed.

But years later, Brian would walk through the same player’s tunnel at Reed Arena.

Past the locker rooms.

Onto the same hardwood floor.

Only this time, he wasn’t there to play basketball.

He was there to preach the Gospel.

But here’s the backstory.

In 1989, another Aggie student named Gregg Matte helped start a Bible study in an apartment at Texas A&M.

It began with a small group of students.

About twelve people.

A Bible.

A guitar.

And a burden to see college students encounter Jesus.

Gregg had prayed what he later called a dangerous prayer:

“Your will, not mine.”

And before he left Texas A&M, he asked God to make the school known as a Christian university.

That small apartment Bible study eventually became Breakaway Ministries.

What started with twelve students became one of the largest weekly college Bible studies in the country.

And in 2023, Brian McCormack returned to College Station to lead it.

The place where his dream died became the place where his calling came alive.

Today, thousands of students gather at Reed Arena on Tuesday nights for worship, biblical teaching, and prayer.

And Brian now walks onto the same court where he once dreamed of playing.

As Brian has said, “I’d choose preaching at center court over playing there every time.”

Pastor, do not underestimate what God can do with a closed door.

Sometimes the rejection that feels like the end of your story is actually God redirecting you toward your assignment.

The place that hurt you may become the place God uses you.

The dream that died may be making room for a calling that matters even more.

So if you are in a season of disappointment, delay, or closed doors, do not assume God is done.

He may be preparing you for a stage you never would have chosen, but one He always intended to use.
