The Spiritual Architect

Behind almost every public figure is someone most people never hear about.

Walt Disney had Roy. Billy Graham had Cliff Barrows. Martin Luther King Jr. had Howard Thurman. Not a campaign manager. Not a speechwriter. A pastor whose quiet influence helped shape one of the most important movements in American history.

History keeps the speeches and the marches. Thurman’s contribution was different. He was a theologian, a mentor, a man who prayed more than he performed. For many leaders of his generation, he became a spiritual anchor.

Jesus and the Disinherited

His book, Jesus and the Disinherited, gave language to people carrying the weight of injustice. It argued that Jesus was not distant from the wounded, the threatened, the pushed aside. He was with them. And he offered courage rooted in love, not survival instinct.

Thurman didn’t build that kind of influence by chasing attention. He built it through prayer, study, long conversations, and the slow work of becoming someone others could lean on. He believed the inner life wasn’t a retreat from the world’s pain. It was where lasting courage actually formed.

The Ministry No One Sees

That matters more than it sounds. Because not every ministry that matters is loud. Some of the most important work is the kind almost nobody sees. The conversation after service. The prayer over a young leader. The lunch where someone finally tells the truth. The text that keeps someone from quitting.

Movements aren’t only built by the people on the platform. They’re built by the people who form those people.

If your ministry feels hidden right now, that doesn’t mean it’s small. Quiet faithfulness builds roots long before anyone sees fruit. And sometimes the deepest work happens long before anyone applauds.

I’m Justin Trapp, and this is Ministry Minute.
