The Sweetness of Learning
The documentary A Life Apart, about Hasidic Jews, shows the value of education in the religious life of the Hasids. At age three, they have a ceremony where they go to school and read the alphabet. As they read each letter, they eat a piece of candy to reinforce the sweetness of learning (A Life Apart: Hasidism in America [PBS, 1997], 47:00). Parents have only a short time with their children—just 18 summers before they may move out and go on their way. During that time, we have certain truths we want to be sure to teach them. One of these is an appreciation of Scripture.
