Inspired by real events, the movie The Way Back (directed by Peter Weir, Newmarket Films, 2010) tells the story of a group of ravaged war prisoners, held captive in a Siberian labor camp in communist Russia, who must travel four thousand miles on foot to find refuge in India. The escapees must overcome a great deal of adversity on their way to freedom—including navigating a seemingly endless desert, as well as the unforgiving terrain of the Himalayan mountains. Like the former war prisoners in The Way Back, Joshua and the Israelites had to overcome many obstacles before they could reach their desired destination.
